Diversified Product Line
A wide variety of dry and wet mixes are produced and packaged. To accommodate this diversification, Shick engineered three different blending arrangements for the dry mix area. Two were identical, having bulk flour and sugar delivery, separate minor ingredient hand dump systems and sharing of a single liquid shortening additive system. A third blending line was installed for the special “fat-free” mixes.
Granulated and powdered sugar is pneumatically conveyed to a wet processing area for production of jellies, fillings and icings.
Powdered Sugar Production
The milling process creates another unique set of problems. Because of the presence of a combustible material (starch) in an enclosed environment, safeguards were provided to meet NEMA Class I, Division 1 requirements. Shick engineers worked closely with the client’s architects and engineers to incorporate features into the building’s electrical system and equipment design. Because fracturing of the sugar crystals produces heat, the milling system utilizes an anti-caking agent (starch), as well as vacuum sweeping of the mill with conditioned air for clean, efficient transfer and storage.
